This weekend saw 5 of the Whitehaven AFC Girls Teams kick off their league seasons in the WCYL!!
In the U14s Girls Division it was the U14s Girls who were on course to win the league last a season before it was curtailed up first in a derby against Workington Reds Diamonds.
They started this season as they finished the last season playing some outstanding football, with really slick passing and always players offering options in good areas of the pitch and mounting very good attacks.
They ran out 8-1 winners with a hat trick coming from Kayleigh Wharton in a great all round performance. Other scorers were Millie Teare x2, Ellie Parkin, Jaya Pilkington & Amelia McGonagle.
Their younger counter parts the u13 Girls also competing in the U14s division also got off to a winning start with a very solid and professional performance against a very good Allerdale Girls side. The Whitehaven Girls showed a real desire to win the ball back in dangerous areas of the pitch and once had the ball used it well with some good link up play. The Whitehaven girls ran out 5-0 winners, with goals from Layla Rudd x2, Evie Kerrush x2 & Millie Clark.
Millie Clark scored a terrific goal from 25 yards out to top off a fine performance in her first game as the new team Captain, whilst last years Team Captain Katie Kegg showed why she had that honour by putting in a Girl of the Game Performance.
In the u12 Girls Reds League the U12s put in a mixed performance, in a local derby against Workington Reds Diamonds. The Whitehaven players set off fantastic with a goal within the first minute to make it 1-0, but they failed to kick on from that good start and struggled to find rhythm against a very strong Diamonds side who were unlucky not to score an equaliser or even more in the first half.
The second half the Whitehaven Girls picked up and their pressing was a lot more joined up and they looked much better once they won the ball, finding more opportunities but continued to be thwarted against a very good Diamonds goalkeeper. However the Whitehaven Girls eventually grabbed the second goal and this gave them the confidence to relax more and they would net a further 4 to finish off with a 6-0 win, Girl of the Game Brooke Butler netting a hat trick, while Lexie Roberts bagged 2 and Lani Fatialofa grabbed one at the end.
In the same division the younger u12s Blues had a tough opener against a very good Allerdale Tigers side and were unlucky not to come away with a point in a close 3-2 loss.
The second u12s Yellows team playing in the Blue League also came up against another Allerdale team in the form of the Panthers, and in another very tight affair, with some pleasing football from the young Whitehaven girls, they lost 6-4.
