The Girls U14s FA County Cup Final was an all Whitehaven affair, with Whitehaven U13s playing their older counterparts, the Whitehaven U14s. The U13s were playing in their first County Cup Final and had done excellent to reach the Final with being a full bottom age team, while the u14s had also had a good season in the County Cup and had continued to get stronger as the season continued and made it to their third County Final in as many years.
Both team played extremely well and battled for every ball, the first half saw the u14s dominate the midfield and contain the u13s with great team work as a unit to not leave any spaces in between each other. Kacie Gillespie was constantly barking out orders to the team and encourgaing them throughout, and the 14s could've took the lead on a couple of occasions, with their best chance coming from a corner which looked certain to go in, but a scamble on the line saw the ball cleared. For all the good play of the 14s, it was the 13s who carved out a couple of clear cut chances, one in particular 1v1 with keeper with the keeper doing exceptionally well to prevent the goal and keep it level at half time.
The 13s started the brighter in the second half without really testing the goalkeeper, but then the 14s took hold of the game once more, suffocating the midfield and their striker Abigail Lamb who played in goal for first half, had a couple of chances to net, howver it was 0-0 with 5 mins to go when the U14s player Holly Laing broke free in the penalty area and scored a really well taken goal. This sparked the game into real life and within minutes of the restart Sophie Douglas scores a fantastic solo goal, picking the ball up from Laya McKendrey after a clearance by the 14s, she beat 1, then 2 and eventually 6 players to strike hiome to make it 1-1. This may of been the type of goal to kick the 13s on, but the 14s showed amazing character and used their experience to stay calm and composed and a minute later and with seconds to go and everybody expecting extra time and maybe penalties, the U14s pushed on and Holly Laing scored a headed goal from a corner which looked like it might be cleared, but Holly was brave and stuck her head where she might get hurt to clinch the Win and the County Cup for the 14s. The game ended seconds later the result 2-1 to Whitehaven Amateurs.
Coaches John & Dawn Gibbons were both extremely proud of all the players, saying 'Both teams played fantastic football with all three goals been scored in the last 5 minutes of the game. This is the third year running that we have made it to the final but the first time of winning. The girls have a never give up and their attitude keeps surprising everyone.
Special mention to Abigail Lamb and Emma Corkish for volunteering to go in goals for the day as the 14s had no recognised Goalkeeper making the triumph even better.
Both U14s goals scored by Holly Laing and U13s Sophie Douglas.
