Battling u16 Lionesses Go Down To Tough Cockermouth!!

September 18, 2018

The Whitehaven AFC U16 Lionesses were in action this Sunday in their second game of the CFA Womans & Girls County League in a relatively local affair against Cockermouth JFC Girls, where they went down 8-2, however it was a closer game than the scoreline suggested.

The Amateur Girls started really well with very good energy and positive play and were rewarded with an early goal when the powerful Molly Dougan smashed in an opener from the edge of the area to the delight of her team mates. The Lionesses were unlucky not to extend their lead as they continued to cause the Cockermouth girls a multitude of problems and put them on the back foot and they again went close twice more with very good shots.

Against the run of play the home team scored two quick goals to turn the game on its head 2-1, and while the Lionesses tried to gather their compsure Cockermouth scored a third to further extended their lead 3-1. Undeterred Whitehaven’s keeper Willow Warneford made a great save, then played the ball out short to classy defender, Talia Frazer who passed it into the midfield, two swift passes more and the ball was with deadly striker Zara Denvir who cut inside the Cockermouth's on defender and hit the ball into the top corner for arguably the goal of the day. Great finish and showed the character of the team and the way the team are trying to play football and being brave and positive in possession.

In the second half playing up the hill and into a gusting wind the Lionesses found it very hard going and defended valiantly for large periods and they did have chances on the break to nick a goal or two, however the home team took advantage of the conditions brilliantly and their home ground and managed to score a number of further goals to make the tie look a little lob sided. Final score was 8-2 but lots of positives to take out of the day.

The fixture list has thrown up a strange situation in that the return match is this weekend on Sunday 21st down at Amateurs astro 1pm KO...'who will win “Round 2?
