Brave u9 Lionesses Play Their Hearts Out!!

May 8, 2018

The new u9 Whitehaven AFC Lionesses finished off their first season together as the bottom age team in a 2yr age band in the WCYL Finals Day and although it was a hard day for them, they continued to try and play the way they are asked and work as a team and come off with smiles on faces.

The first match for our newly formed under 9s team took on Allerdale U10s. 1st half was end to end footie with Ella Gilmour making some heroic saves to keep the Lionesses in it. A great defensive partnership between Anya Brannon and Marcey Nelson made it difficult for the opposition to score. Unfortunately though Allerdale  did break our defence but not our confidence with a good goal.

Up next was our very own WAFC Blues team. The 9s really wanted to prove they were no push over and so it turned out to be. Some Sparkling runs up the middle from Olivia Beattie showing great skill and determination, and crunching tackles from the fearless Hannah Nicholson to try and tame the Lionesses under 10s. The under 9's came close to scoring in the 2nd half with a near miss from Super Summer Swinton and she was unlucky not to score. Eden Clark made it difficult for the Blues with some great marking and tackling, however the Blues proved a force too strong and it was another defeat for the 9s. The girls still had lots of pride and positives to take to the next match and the Blues knew they'd had to work hard for the win.

On to Cockermouth next, and again some fantastic displays of skill from Lani Fatialfoa and Lexie Roberts, sharing the attacking runs with Olivia Beattie and Ella Gilmour. Lani Fatialofa made a tantalising run up the left wing and came close to scoring only to find the side netting. Never giving up, the girls still kept the spirit going. That goal was coming! The second half saw some great passing between Hannah Nicholson and Captain Caitlin Routledge. Catlin's hard work paid off when she smashed the ball in the bottom corner assisted from lively Lexie Roberts. The team celebrated like they'd won the cup, right there was our team spirit, unfortunately not a winning goal but the girls didn't care.

The final game the Lionesses took on Allerdale Tigers. This was back to back football with very little rest in the sweltering heat, but that wasn't going to keep these girls down. They kept their partnerships going, their discipline together and made Tigers work for the full game. Lexie Roberts came close on a couple of occasions however they couldn't break them down.

Lexie Roberts was our girl of the day, she had the fire in her belly for every game and just lives and breathes football and its very evident in what she does on the pitch and brings to the team. The team spirit and passion amongst the young Lionesses will do wonders for them next season. The desire to play and not particularly win was evident today.

Coaches Vanessa Fatialofa & Rob Campbell said 'We knew today and to be fair the season was going to be hard for the u9 Lionesses this year. 4 Players moved up from last year but the rest of the girls have joined over the season, some had not played football before and to make it even harder they are a full u9 team in an u10 age band. However out of all the teams we coach these crazy bunch make us so, so proud, always smiling, always wanting to have fun, some funny characters in the team and that spirit and togetherness will really help in years to come and we couldn't wish for a better group of Lionesses, well done all and thank you to the parents for their continued support!,
