Focus Scaffolding
As you will no doubt be aware, our club sponsors are Focus Scaffolding, a local firm who have supported local sport for some time. We are delighted to have them on board and look forward to a successful partnership with them.
Many people are asking about the rumours circulating the town regarding a shared facility with Whitehaven Rugby League Club. We take the stance that when there is something concrete to report we will report it, but until then we maintain silence. There ARE discussions and debates about a shared stadium, and these are ongoing, but there are many issues outstanding. When we are satisfied they are resolved we will report what has transpired....not until. In the meantime, a team is on site testing the soil structure to see if it can support a stadium, and they are likely to be there for a couple of weeks.
Our thoughts and continued good wishes go to John George and his family.
Update:
Memberships are now due, so it's important to ensure as many as possible join. Remember, the club is essentially a membership one, so if you want to enjoy the surroundings and social side that goes with the football match....pay up !!! It's not dear and the money helps to pay for the little things that make a football club tick.
At the recent Northern League AGM Whitehaven AFC received prizes for being top scorers in their League outside the top three, appearing in the top three in the NL Fair Play League, and for winning the Ernest Armstrong Divisional Cup Final. Many clubs went out of their way to express their support for the town given the recent horrific events, as did our League Chairman, Mike Amos, Secretary Tony Golightly, and Chaplain Rev. Leo Osborne. As representatives of the club we accepted their good wishes and record them here.
Kev Connelly picked up two awards at the Presentation Night for Players Player of the year, and Managers Player of the Year for the Northern League side, while Greg Quayle did the same for the Cumerland League team. Kevin appeared in the top scorers list for the division, the first time we have been represented, but hopefully not the last.
The second extra qualifying round of the FA Cup saw us meet Norton & Stockton Ancients of NL1. I'm afraid the gulf in class told in the finish, but not until we had given a good account of ourselves in the first half when we turned around at 0-0. In truth we should have taken the lead on three seperate occasions, but bad luck and bad finishing meant it wasn't to be. Norton then gave us an object lesson in how to put the ball in the net, but a 5-1 scoreline flattered them somewhat. "Tino" Hodgson found the net for us after a good run and 1-2 with Gary Hewitt, but to our credit we didn't throw in the towel and were still trying to score at the finish.
Following that game we met Chester-le-Street at home and came away with a 0-0 result which pleased manager Martin Harris given that our injury list from the FA Cup game simply grew. With Leigh Dunn suspended and Mally Holliday, Carl McGrady, and Stuart Shaw all injured, and David Dustin unavailable, the lads battled hard for a point. Gillford Park were the opposition on Bank Holiday Monday, and again we came away with a 2-2 draw with several players out. Kev Connelly netted twice in a see-saw game which either side could have won, but had to settle for a point each.
Our FA Vase game with Daisy Hill of the Vodkat North West Counties League2 went to extra time where we were fortunate enough to progress to the next round. By all accounts it wasn't a classic first half, but the second half was much better and we created chances to score. 1-1 at the end of normal time with Andrew Rowntree finding the net, then after going 2-1 down in the first minutes of extra time, Kev Connelly popped up with two goals to clinch the game. Following our win against Daisy Hill we travelled to Runcorn Linnets of the Vodkat North West Counties League 1, we again went to extra time after a good defensive display saw the game end 0-0 unfortunately it wasnt to be and we got beat 1-0 in extra time.
Following the draw with Hebburn and the victory over Thornaby we remain the only team in the league to be unbeaten, this will be put to the test next weekend when we travel to Newton Aycliffe who currently sit in 2nd position in the table, before then though we have a home game against Carlisle City in the County Cup on Tuesday evening.
